New Weblog Showcase: FAQ

What exactly is the New Weblog Showcase?

The New Weblog Showcase is a weekly contest which provides a forum for new bloggers to showcase their best work. The goal is to create a spot where new bloggers can have a chance to show off and get some wide exposure, and where established bloggers and blog-readers can come to find fresh new voices.

How does it work?

The contest runs weekly, beginning on Tuesday. From Tuesday through Friday, bloggers can submit their weblogs and a sample post to be displayed on the main Showcase page. Other bloggers can then read the submitted posts, and, if they find them worthy, can "vote" by linking to the posts they like on their own blogs (just as they would with any other item they find of interest). Each morning, the daily Ecosystem scan counts how many links each submitted post has received and updates the Showcase page's statistics. At the end of the week on Sunday night, a final count is taken, and Monday, results are reviewed (morning) and finalized (evening) to announce the final winners

Run that schedule by me again, please?

Tuesday - Friday : Bloggers may submit entries to the Showcase
Tuesday - Sunday : Bloggers vote for entries by linking to them
Sunday night: Final vote count is collected
Monday morning: Preliminary results announced
Monday evening: Results certified and winner declared

Important note: although you may vote for a post by linking it to it at any time, you must ensure that the link is still present on your main page on Sunday night --- otherwise it will not count in the final tally!

What is the difference between the "political" and "non-political" categories?

The Showcase now has two winners each week: one for each category. Basically, there's quite a bit of partisan politics in the Blogosphere, and what I found was that the Showcase was turning into a slugfest where liberals picked their favorite post, conservatives picked theirs, and both sides fired away. That's all fine and good, but I also wanted to provide a space for bloggers not interested in the political side of things to gain exposure. So, if you don't want to compete in the partisan political fight, submit your post as "non-political" --- you might not get as much exposure, but you'll probably have a better chance of winning. If, on the other hand, you want to dive into the political fray, go for the "political" category --- the competition will be tougher, but the potential rewards are likely greater as the many political bloggers who watch the Showcase will pay more attention to your entry. The category you choose is entirely up to you.

Do bloggers "vote" for a specific post, or for the whole blog?

Bloggers can link to either the main blog page for a Showcased blog or to the specific post that blogger submitted. (Matter of fact, they can link to anything they want!) The contest, however, only counts the links to the specific, submitted post. So if you want to help a blogger win the week, make sure you link to the post, and not just the main blog!

Do I have to be registered in the Ecosystem for my vote to count?

Yes! If you haven't added your blog to the Ecosystem, go here to do so.

What do the winners get?

The winning weblogs will be posted at the very top of the Ecosystem page for the week folllowing their victory. In subsequent weeks, they will be added to the running list of historical winners on the sidebar of the Showcase page.

What if there is a tie?

If two or more blogs in a category have the exact same number of links to their submitted posts, the winner will be the blogger who started blogging most recently. If there is still a tie, the blogger who submitted their post to the contest earliest wins. And if there's still a tie then, I'll make something up.

Who is eligible?

Only new blogs are eligble. At the moment, "new" is defined as a blog which has been operating for less than three months as of the end date of the contest. Depending on the volume of response, I hope to shorten the window down to two months or even a single month in the future. Also note: You can only enter the Showcase once, with a single blog!

What else do I have to do to enter?

Starting this week, to be eligible to win the contest, you must also vote for at least three other weblogs in the contest prior to the end of the week (EOD Sunday) by linking to them on your own weblog. For your votes to count, you must register your weblog in the Ecosystem, if it is not there already. In addition, I ask that on the Monday results are announced for the week you entered, that you also link to the results post at The Truth Laid Bear. (I have no way to enforce this last provision, but consider it a polite request).

How do you verify that a blog really is new?

I don't; it is purely by the honor system. Anyone caught deliberately abusing the Showcase, however, will be immediately disqualified, and may suffer other punishments up to and including being banned for life from the Ecosystem itself.

Do I have to link to the Showcase when I cast my vote by linking to a submitted blog post?

Nope, simply linking to the post will do. Of course, if you find the Showcase useful and/or interesting, links to it are very much welcome.

I have another question that you haven't answered, what do I do?

Drop me a line, and I'll try to get back to you as soon as I can. Generally, expect to wait until the next weekend, though --- I get a bit tied up with real life during the week.
